And then consider this, from Steinbeck’s Travels with Charley: Consider Hemingway’s famous ballscratching machismo, as refracted through his obsession with fly-fishing. Steinbeck was a better novelist, a better pet owner, and a nicer man. Lots of people seem to like Hemingway, and I expect they have their reasons, but I refuse to entertain them. Like I said, this is based on nothing other than a hunch. My current favourite is this: just as you are either a cat person or a dog person, United or City, Italian or French food: you are either a Hemingway person or a Steinbeck person. It must be a hangover of studying English at university and being forced to provide evidence for all my reckless assertions - now I treat myself to the occasional assertion, the more reckless the better. I like forming theories about literature - particularly theories based on zero evidence. To get his boots wet in such cold weather might kill him. If he stepped there, he might break through the ice into a pool of water. He saw that an underground spring flowed under the ice at that spot. Once, he stopped suddenly, and then walked around a part of the frozen stream. It was a trail that would lead him straight to Henderson Creek and his friends.Īs he walked, he looked carefully at the ice in front of him. He began to walk on the snow-covered ice. He came to a frozen stream called Indian Creek. The man continued to walk down the trail. It knew the weather was too cold to travel. It was a big gray animal, half dog and half wolf. This video series has been a passion project and a dream of mine for several years. Over the past few years, a slew of books, podcasts, and other materials have come out to better help those looking to learn more about mindfulness. There are countless ways to achieve mindfulness such as guided imagery, breathing methods, and cold water therapy. The keyword for all mindfulness practices is “present.” As thoughts come into your space, you attempt to not judge yourself or read too much into them, but instead, stay in the now. A type of meditation, the practice of mindfulness is one in which you focus on the here and now and sit with your feelings and senses in the present moment. “So far.” There’s more weight loss to come, recalling horrormeister King’s Thinner (as Richard Bachman), though without the curse. “Twenty-eight pounds,” he tells a doctor friend. He’s a big guy, clocking in north of 240 pounds, but lately the bathroom scale has been telling him something different: He looks the same, but he’s losing weight, pound after pound. King ( The Outsider, 2018, etc.) revisits a couple of familiar themes while paying heed to new realities in this elegant whisper of a story. This may be a graphic novel, but it is also one of the most honest, refreshing, detailed and touching memoirs I have ever read. When I started writing this book I was afraid that it wouldn't say the things I wanted to say, or that nobody would relate to it, or that it just wasn't worth writing, but I proved myself wrong, and that in and of itself deserves 5 stars. I've been able to communicate an idea that is really close to my heart, and I have had it be so well-recieved. I feel really inspired by all of the stories that readers have told me about the Tomboys they know in their lives, or the ways in which they've felt like outsiders, or the ways in which they've never personally dealt with bullying, but really appreciated the way that I spoke about it. Most importantly though, it was challenging and important to write a book that has such a personal message (one that so many people of many ages and genders and sexual orientation have written to me about since this book came out). It was a challenge to write a book that spans the first 18 years of my life in a way that is succinct, engaging, and entertaining, without being overly redundant or narcissistic (I reserved my narcissism for the glowing review I'm giving myself here). I learned a lot from writing this memoir, which is my first full-length narrative graphic novel. Hello! I'm an fairly biased reviewer, because I wrote this book, but I figured I'd throw my 2 cents in anyhow. Even secondary characters are well-rounded, with their own histories and motivations. Autumn’s coming-of-age is sensitively chronicled, with a wide range of experiences and events shaping her character. But on August 8, everything changes, and Autumn has to rely on all her strength to move on. In the summer after graduation, Autumn and Finny reconnect and are finally ready to be more than friends. Growing up, Autumn and Finny were like peas in a pod despite their differences: Autumn is “quirky and odd,” while Finny is “sweet and shy and everyone like him.” But in eighth grade, Autumn and Finny stop being friends due to an unexpected kiss. They drift apart and find new friends, but their friendship keeps asserting itself at parties, shared holiday gatherings and random encounters. The finely drawn characters capture readers’ attention in this debut.Īutumn and Phineas, nicknamed Finny, were born a week apart their mothers are still best friends. |
